1. Generalist herbivores feed on a wide and diverse set of species, but fine‐scale foraging patterns may be affected by the interplay between the quality, quantity and spatial distribution of host plants. 2. The foraging patterns of a prevalent Neotropical herbivore, the leaf‐cutter ant Atta laevigata, in the Brazilian Cerrado savannas were examined in order to determine if patterns observed are in concert with central‐place foraging predictions. 3. The results showed that A. laevigata acts as a polyphagous but highly selective herbivore, with ant attacks often resulting in partial defoliation of less‐preferred species and full defoliation of preferred ones. It was found, for the first time, that there is a strong and positive relationship between the relative attack frequency on plants from preferred species and foraging distance to the nest. This suggests a balance between the quality of plant resources harvested and costs involved in their transportation. It was also observed that colonies focused their harvest on preferred species in months with low availability of young leaves. Consequently, high herbivory rate was more frequent in plants attacked far away from the nest and in dry months. 4. These assessments highlight the fact that Atta colonies may become more selective as foraging distance to the nest increases and in response to fluctuations in the availability of palatable resources throughout the year. The results also show some dissimilarities in the foraging behaviours of A. laevigata when compared with other locations, suggesting that widely distributed herbivores may modify foraging strategies across their geographic range. 相似文献

Platyrrhini (New World monkeys, NWm) are a group of primates characterized by behavioral and reproductive traits that are otherwise uncommon among primates, including social monogamy, direct paternal care, and twin births. As a consequence, the study of Platyrrhine primates is an invaluable tool for the discovery of the genetic repertoire underlying these taxon‐specific traits. Recently, high conservation of vasopressin (AVP) sequence, in contrast with high variability of oxytocin (OXT), has been described in NWm. AVP and OXT functions are possible due to interaction with their receptors: AVPR1a, AVPR1b, AVPR2, and OXTR; and the variability in this system is associated with the traits mentioned above. Understanding the variability in the receptors is thus fundamental to understand the function and evolution of the system as a whole. Here we describe the variability of AVPR1b coding region in 20 NWm species, which is well‐known to influence behavioral traits such as aggression, anxiety, and stress control in placental mammals. Our results indicate that 4% of AVPR1b sites may be under positive selection and a significant number of sites under relaxed selective constraint. Considering the known role of AVPR1b, we suggest that some of the changes described here for the Platyrrhini may be a part of the genetic repertoire connected with the complex network of neuroendocrine mechanisms of AVP–OXT system in the modulation of the HPA axis. Thus, these changes may have promoted the emergence of social behaviors such as direct paternal care in socially monogamous species that are also characterized by small body size and twin births. 相似文献

A processing endoribonuclease was isolated from the cytoplasm of chick embryos. The enzyme was easily obtained using an RNA extraction procedure based on a mild deproteinization with Sarkosyl and cold phenol/chloroform. This technique assured the recovery of several proteins and the endoribonuclease in association with the RNA. It was demonstrated that this endoribonuclease was capable of promoting, in vitro, a precise processing of naked 45-S ribosomal RNA precursor to molecules resembling the intermediates as well as the 28-S and 18-S cytoplasmic RNAs found in vivo. The presence of magnesium ions was required for the correct processing function of the enzyme. In addition, under the same conditions, the mature ribosomal RNA substrates were degraded at a slower rate by this RNA-associated RNase. It was possible to fractionate the enzymatic preparation into two different populations by means of a sucrose gradient: one associated and the other partially free of an RNA component. The effect of the intrinsic RNA associated with the endoribonuclease on the enzymatic activity was tested by analyzing both the enzymatic populations and the total enzymatic preparation treated with pronase or with immobilized pancreatic RNase. In all cases in which the RNA component was present, the enzyme showed processing activity. On the other hand, when the RNA component was absent or at least partially degraded the enzyme proved to be more active in processing precursor molecules and in promoting extensive degradation of mature RNA species. In minces prepared from the frontal cortex of rats treated with ketanserin (10 mg/kg i.p.) or mianserin (5 mg/kg i.p.) twice daily for 21 days, the Vmax of the adenylate cyclase stimulated by NE (100 microM) is attenuated, suggesting that ketanserin and mianserin share with a number of antidepressants the ability to attenuate the adenylate cyclase stimulation by NE. Ketanserin, given with the above mentioned dose schedule for 7 consecutive days, reduced the Bmax of 5HT2 recognition sites but failed to change either the Bmax or the apparent Kd of H-mianserin binding. A significant decrease in the Bmax of 5HT2 binding sites is elicited also by a single injection of mianserin (1). This drug also down-regulates its own binding when given twice daily for 3 weeks. From this and other information (2,3), it is concluded that ketanserin and mianserin bind to distinct recognition sites. The possibility that 5HT2 and mianserin recognition sites are functionally related and that serotonergic synapses are modulated by multiple chemical signals might be considered. 相似文献

A review of in vitro mutagenesis assessment of metal compounds in mammalian and nonmammalian test systems has been compiled.
Prokaryotic assays are ineffective or inconsistent in their detection of most metals as mutagens, with the notable exception
of hexavalent chromium. Mammalian assay systems appear to be similarly inappropriate for the screening of metal compounds
based upon the limited number of studies that have employed those compounds having known carcinogenic activity. Although of
limited value as screening tests for the detection of potentially carcinogenic metal compounds, the well-characterized in

The effect of histamine was studied simultaneously on isolated smooth muscle preparations obtained from the body and base of the bladder of sheep.
